Kinja'd!!!

Maxxtrax and recovery strap arrived. Any good ideas on mounting points for the strap ? I assume I need some kind of shackle with a removable bolt, and it should be mounted to the frame right ? What about a robust d-ring to connect the strap to my existing tow hook? Is that a terrible idea?

If you have a solidly mounted tow hook a D-ring to that should be fine, I would read local clubs requirements for its mounting to be sure since some have weird things they want done for mounting.,

Nice boards!

Lets see the tow hook, it may be a tie down point..

Got any soft shackles? They are the safest way to do it.

I can’t wait to try them. Would have saved my ass a few times last year. I wonder if they’d be safe for some bridging. The Miata is only 2k pounds...

Here’s the front tow strap. The bracket is bolted to the frame

The MAXSA knockoffs. Couldn't justify the full price. I'm not doing any serious expeditions

Hmmm, so that red strap is not going to work. Maybe if it’s an easy steady pull but I bet it gets ripped right off there.

Option 1 is to get a soft shackle that fits through that bolt hole. my only concern is that bracket isn’t very thick. I t might cut a shackle under load.

Option 2 is to see if you can fit a 3/4 shackle through there.. Now you are adding metal into the mix- risks just went up, safety gloves, no standing around near a pull, do everything slowly and triple think/check everything.

Option one sounds sketchy, option two sounds like more than I want to spend for a subpar setup.

Maybe replace the entire tow hook with one that doesn’t use a strap, and then use a soft shackle?

This is like the piece I use on the front of my Tacoma;

It’s pretty heavy duty but still is frowned on by some. I’m comfortable with it as I don’t do huge recoveries and if I did I would use the receiver shackle.

This is the ARB recovery front mount, this is the right answer ;

You can get a shackle mount to go into a hitch. I find it usually easier to get dragged back and off wherever I got stuck than continuing through in most cases anyhow. Although realizing you’re in a Miata that may limit your options. I haven’t seen one for anything less than a 2" receiver, and you might struggle to find a hitch that size for a Miata. Plus it would look weird and probably kill departure angles.

I’ve found that simply pushing the loop on the end of the strap through a tow eye and running the strap back through itself works great on one end of the strap, if there’s some way you can drop the loop over a tow hook on the other vehicle, or get it into a shackle.

Be wary of dropping a tow strap over a hitch ball. It’ll work okay if you’re just doing a gentle pull, but if you need to snatch or jerk at all, a better solution is to pull the ball mount out of the receiver, put the end of the strap in instead, and put the hitch pin back in through the loop on the end of the strap . Using the safety chain loops on a hitch also isn’t the best idea, as while it may work they’re not really intended for more than a handful of uses. Most modern trailer hitches have them beefed up to handle more abuse, but not all do, and they’re not really intended for direct pulling.

I just posted my shackles. 6.5 tons, big motherfuckers, you can get ‘em at most industrial tool stores. If you’re anywhere near Everett, hit up Dunlap Industrial Tools.

Here’s another interesting product, claimed to be more effective than Maxtrax but hell if I know. Never seen anything like any of these products in use but you’ve got me intrigued.
